The Brearley Singers perform two major concerts each school year. The first is our December Holiday Concert presenting a program of holiday music and other selections of classical, gospel, folk, and contemporary pieces specifically arranged for choirs. The Brearley Upper and Middle School Choruses join us in this concert. The following May, we perform a Spring Concert of one or more major classical oratorios. In the past we have presented works by Mozart, including his Requiem, Fauré, Beethoven, Handel, Haydn, Vivaldi, Poulenc, and Brahms, among others. For our 10th anniversary, we presented a concert in Alice Tully Hall, where we performed the Mozart Requiem, and the Vivaldi Gloria. Beginning with our 2010-2011 season, we will be under the direction of David Harris, who succeeded Stephen Black as our Music Director, who will be pursuing his graduate education at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
The Brearley Singers is dedicated to presenting beautiful choral music and to advancing the musicianship of all involved, while maintaining a fun and friendly atmosphere. Since we are a nonaudition chorus with no requirements of prior singing experience or training, our programs are developed at a pace that allows even beginning singers to feel comfortable in learning the music for each concert. Having fun during rehearsals is as important to us as learning the music and training our voices. We rehearse each Monday night during the school year from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM, beginning the Fall and Spring semesters this season on Monday September 13th, 2010, The first rehearsal of each semester in the season is always a special combined rehearsal/party to welcome new members starting at 6:30 PM. All rehearsals are held at The Brearley School, 610 East 83rd Street on the upper east side near Carl Shurz Park.
